The Content Gap Method: Find What Viewers Want But Nobody Makes

content gapskeyword researchaudience research

There's a reliable formula for finding YouTube opportunities that most creators completely miss: find keywords where the top videos have lots of views but angry comment sections.

Why like-to-view ratio matters more than view count

A video with 2 million views and a 0.8% like ratio is telling you something important: viewers found it, watched it, and were disappointed. The high views mean the demand is real. The low engagement means the supply is inadequate.

This is your gap.

The satisfaction scoring method

For any keyword you're considering, look at the top 5 videos and check:

1. Like-to-view ratio — industry average is 2–4%. Below 1.5% suggests viewer dissatisfaction 2. Comment sentiment — scan comments for phrases like "didn't answer my question", "waste of time", "outdated", "too basic" 3. Video age vs view velocity — old videos still ranking means nobody new has made something better

When all three signals converge — low like ratio, negative comments, and no recent competition — you have a genuine content gap.

The most common complaints (and what they mean for you)

"Didn't actually answer the question" The video promised an answer in the title but delivered generic information instead. Your opportunity: make a video that directly answers the question in the first 60 seconds.

"Too basic" The searcher has some knowledge but the video assumed zero. Your opportunity: make the intermediate version — assume the basics, go deeper.

"Outdated" The information was correct 2 years ago but things have changed. Your opportunity: the exact same title with "2025" added and genuinely current information.

"Missing [specific detail]" Viewers are commenting what the video should have included. Your opportunity: make that video — it's been written for you in the comments.

The practical workflow

1. Pick your target keyword 2. Watch the top 3–5 videos for 5 minutes each 3. Read the 20 most recent comments on each 4. Note every complaint pattern 5. Build your content brief around solving those exact complaints 6. Your title should signal you've solved the problem they encountered

The gap isn't just in keywords nobody covers. It's in keywords everyone covers badly.
